One of the great players in Stanford football history, Darrin Nelson was a Kodak first team All-American in 1981. Nelson is the only player in school history to be named first team All-Pac-10 for four seasons. He finished his career as the school leader in rushing yards (4033), all-purpose running yards (6885), receptions (214), points scored (242) and touchdowns scored (40). A first team Academic All-American, Nelson became the first player in college football history to rush for over 1000 yards and catch more than 50 passes in a season – a feat he accomplished three times in his four years on The Farm. Nelson played at Stanford in 1977 and ’78, missed the ’79 season due to injury, and returned to play in 1980 and ’81. He finished sixth in the 1981 Heisman Trophy balloting, was a first round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 1982 and played 11 years in the NFL. Nelson was later a Senior Associate Athletic Director at Stanford, retiring in 2011.
