Jim Plunkett was awarded the 1970 Heisman Trophy and named consensus first team All-American in addition to the Maxwell Award for the nation’s best quarterback and Player of the Year honors from the United Press International, The Sporting News, and SPORT magazine. His strong arm and big play ability led to the proliferation of pro-style offenses in the Pac-8. He led Stanford to a 27-17 upset victory over Ohio State in the 1971 Rose Bowl and was named the game’s MVP after completing 20-of-30 passes for 265 yards and one touchdown. The 1970 season saw him throw for 2715 yards and 18 touchdowns on 191-358 passing. Plunkett finished his career with 7887 yards of total offense, setting school and NCAA records. He completed 530-of-962 passes in his career for 7544 yards and 52 touchdowns, setting then school records in every category. Plunkett was the number one pick in the 1971 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. In 16 NFL seasons, he won two Super Bowl championships and was named MVP of Super Bowl XV. Plunkett became the second player in Stanford history to have his number retired (#16) in 1991. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
